Counting on the Census: Civic Infrastructure and the Role of Philanthropy
September 15, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
The Census is the backbone of civic engagement and civic infrastructure. Every 10 years, the U.S. Census generates a critical snapshot of America used to
allocate political power and federal funding. Florida’s population of 21.07 million residents, was under-counted in 2020 by nearly 3.5%, (750,600) costing 1 congressional seat. Throughout the coming decade, Floridians can expect to lose between $11 billion- $21 billion of the $1.5 trillion in federal funding. A complete count would have equipped Florida with additional federal funds, enabling the state to retain its own revenue for uses that can reinforce its rising and inclusive economy and enhance civic health and quality life issues.
